Otology is a branch of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (also known as ear, nose, and throat) that deals with disorders of hearing, balance, and the facial nerve. A physician who specializes in this field is called an Otologist. Over the past few decades this field has become even more specialized and now is offered as a dedicated 2-year subspecialization fellowship known as Otology, Neurotology, and Skullbase Surgery. The surgeons who partake in this two-year extra training are known as Neurotologist or Skullbase Surgeons and require to pass a board exam to be certified. There are limited number of such surgeons in every state and only a handful in Canada and many modern countries.
